How Many Snack Lines Should a Pub Stock?

The right number is large enough to cover different customer needs, but small enough that the display stays clear and each line earns its place.

01

Start with customer occasions

A compact drinks-led venue can begin with six to eight well-separated lines. A busy pub with sport, food, a garden and family trade may need ten to sixteen. The number should follow the occasions you serve, not a generic industry rule.

Count distinct needs: classic crisps, premium crisps, pork snacks, nuts, lighter choices, sharing, dietary options and dog treats where relevant. Add depth only where traffic supports it.

02

Use space as a commercial constraint

Customers scan a display quickly. Too many similar packs can make the choice harder and leave slow cases ageing in storage. Group the range by type, keep prices readable and make the strongest sellers easiest to see.

If counter space is limited, show one facing of each line and keep replenishment stock nearby. Bulk products need jars, clean serving tools and a portioning process, so allow operational space as well as shelf space.

03

Let sales decide the next move

Give a new range a defined test period, then compare units sold, gross profit and stock remaining. Expand when several lines repeatedly sell out or customers ask for choices you do not cover.

Reduce duplication before cutting whole needs. Two similar salted crisps may compete with each other, while removing the only gluten-free or lighter option can lose a different customer entirely.

Common questions

Is six snack lines enough for a small pub?

It can be, if the six lines cover clearly different needs and are kept visible and in stock.

When should I add more products?

Add range when current lines turn consistently, customers request an uncovered need or a new trading occasion changes demand.
