Format comparison

Bulk vs Single-Serve Pub Snacks

Both formats can work well. The better choice depends on service speed, staff routines, presentation and how customers use the venue.

01

Single-serve packs prioritise speed

Individual packs are quick to price, count and sell. They work well in queues, at matchdays and anywhere staff cannot pause to portion a product. Packaging also carries the brand and product information.

The trade-off is less control over portion size and presentation. The case format determines the unit customers receive.

02

Bulk formats create flexibility

Bulk nuts, olives and sharing snacks can be portioned for the venue, served in attractive bowls and positioned as a premium accompaniment to drinks.

They require clean storage, portion tools, staff training and accurate cost-per-serving calculations. The number printed on the case is not always the number of portions you will sell.

03

Use a mixed format range

Many venues benefit from both. Keep packaged crisps, pork snacks and classics for speed, then use selected bulk lines for sharing or a more considered drinks occasion.

Compare labour and waste as well as gross margin. A format is only profitable when the serving process is reliable during a real shift.

Useful to know

Common questions

Are bulk snacks always more profitable?

Not automatically. Calculate actual portion cost, labour and waste, then compare the expected selling price and rate of sale.

Which format is fastest at a busy bar?

Single-serve packs are usually fastest because they need no portioning during service.
